Circulation/Reserve Desk

The Circulation/Reserve Desk is where you:
- Check out books. Your SCSU ID/Hoot Loot card serves as your library card.
- Pick up and return any materials on reserve.
- Pick up and return books on loan from another library.
- Pay fines.

SCSU Stacks
|
The Stacks, or Circulating Collection, begin on the First Floor and continue on the Second Floor. On the First Floor you will find:
- Books with call numbers "A" through "N".

Computer Work Stations
|
Use the computer work stations to:
- Search for books using CONSULS, the CSU online catalog. CONSULS provides access to holdings at CCSU, ECSU, WCSU, and the State Library, in addition to SCSU. Books and other items located in Buley will say "SCSU" in the location box of a record.
- Search 100+ online databases for articles and other materials

Reference/Information Desk
|
The Reference/Information Desk. Librarians at this desk will help with the following:
- Locating materials
- Using CONSULS (Connecticut State University Library System on-line catalog) and other databases.
- Finding sources for a paper or class assignment
- Formulating search strategies

Reference Collection
|
The Reference Collection consists of:
- Books such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, statistical resources,
or any other books with "Ref" on the spine label. Reference Books are
non-circulating, meaning they may only be used in the library.
- Electronic Reference sources such as on-line and CD-ROM databases.
- The Pamphlet File which is located against the back wall of the Reference Collection. These materials cover a broad range of subject areas such as places of interest, astronomy, social issues, etc.
- Annual Reports of various companies located beside the pamphlet file.
- Maps and Atlases. USGS maps of the northeastern states can be found in the map cases in the reference area. Major atlases are kept on the atlas tables. Additional atlases are found in the G section of the Reference stacks. Maps of other countries and continents, maps of the states, and nautical and navigational maps are also located in the reference collection.
- Ready Reference Collection which is located behind the
Reference/Information Area and consists of frequently consulted reference sources such as dictionaries, thesauri, statistical sources, style manuals, etc.
- Periodical Indexes and Abstracts which are located between the reference collection and the circulating collection. Note that not all indexes are available as computer databases. Indexes and abstracts are arranged in alphabetical order by title. The Newspaper Indexes can be found at the end of this section.

Inter CONSULS Loan can obtain:
- Books that are available within the CONSULS system (Central, Eastern,
Western, and the State Library are the other CONSULS libraries). Books
available within the CONSULS system usually arrive within a week.

Interlibrary Loan
|
InterLibrary Loan (ILL) can obtain:
- Items outside of the CONSULS system. Most ILL requests arrive within
several days to two weeks. Some requests can take longer, so you will
want to get your requests in early.

Technical Services is where:
- Books and other materials are processed before they are placed in the stacks. If you have specific questions about that area a reference librarian will be happy to assist you.
